New Medicare Beneficiary Identifiers (MBIs)

November 5, 2019 News/Media

November 5, 2019

If you are not currently doing so, Medicare is making it mandatory as of January 1, 2020 you must use the NEW Medicare Beneficiary Identifiers (MBIs) when billing Medicare REGARDLESS of the date of service.

Due to the change you should ask EVERY patient who has Medicare for their Medicare card and record the NEW MBI in your system NOW.  Do not wait for 2020.  As of Jan 1, 2020 any Medicare claims without the NEW MBIs will be rejected REGARDLESS of the date of service.

The MBIs will have 11 (Eleven) characters.  They are randomly generated.  MBIs are numbers and Upper case letters.  Numbers 0-9 are used and all letters are used except for S,L,O,I,B and Z.  See an example below:

1EG4-TE5-MK73

The dashes are NOT used as part of the MBI.  They will not be entered into computer systems or used in file formats.

Please, Please, Please make a copy of the card and send it with the sample so the lab will be able to bill correctly.

Thank You.
