The Role of Laboratory Medicine to Improve Patient Care

The Role of Laboratory Medicine to Improve Patient Care

In 2012 the IFCC (International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine) task force was formed to evaluate the value and impact of using labs in Medicine.  They used “evidence-based” indices to determine the value of labs, either added or reduced.  In other words, does this test, even though it may predict an outcome, make a real difference to patients?  Are all of the lab tests that are ordered useful?  The real answer is they are useful to the extent of the correct testing being ordered as well as to the extent the results are being used correctly.  More importantly, it is critical the test cause no harm.

When Laboratory Medicine Isn’t Useful

Generally, there are five different possible ways an ordered lab test can cause harm:

  • An inappropriate test may be ordered
  • The appropriate test may not be ordered
  • An appropriate test may not be used properly
  • The appropriate test result may be delayed or missed
  • The appropriate test result may be wrong or inaccurate

With the high patient volume providers see, it is understandable why they are unable to spend the time breaking down each portion of a lab report.  Additionally, many providers do not understand the results in their entirety.  This is why it is our responsibility as a lab to assist providers in the interpretation of test findings.

Timing & Accuracy

On the toxicology side of our lab, ILDP prides itself in not recommending cookie cutter testing.  Ordering all drugs to be tested on all patients each time they are tested is not necessary and is not the proper use of drug testing.  We turn the results around quickly so providers can make appropriate decisions and most importantly we make all of our scientists available via cell phones so questions regarding results can be answered quickly and accurately with no room for misinterpretation.  Our scientists conducting the molecular testing in our Ohio lab, pride themselves on fast turn-around times and accurate testing results as well.  They also can be reached via phone to answer questions regarding the testing results.

When Laboratory Medicine is Useful

As a laboratory we are continually working to enhance the value we deliver to providers with our testing.  We understand at times we literally affect the lives of patients with our test results and strive to be exact and accurate with our results.  Over the past two years, everyone has been enlightened as to the value of laboratories in the fight against Covid, however, UTI, respiratory, wound, nail fungus, gastrointestinal, and toxicology testing has been done long before Covid appeared.  Our job is to assist the provider in the care of their patients by delivering to them the most accurate results possible in the shortest amount of time. This will allow them to make the most informed decision they can to best treat their patients.  We pride ourselves in this effort and consider ourselves a partner to all providers we serve.

Thank you for allowing us to participate in the care of your patients.
